Kelly makes it two wins to start singles campaign

Gary Kelly was in dominant form as he beat one of his closest rivals for a place in the semi-finals, Shannon McIlroy from New Zealand, 10-1, 7-5 to make it two wins to begin his challenge for gold in the men’s singles.

The two-time Commonwealth medallist took charge of the game from the first bowl, keeping the New Zealander under constant pressure.

McIlroy struggled to find consistency in his draws and even when he did produce a good bowl, Kelly, almost every time bettered him with his next effort.

Kelly has moved to the top of Section B with only the winners moving forward to the semi-finals.

His next game is at 08:30 BST on Saturday morning against Liam Hill from Tonga.

Chloe Wilson and Shauna O'Neill also secured victory on Friday with a comprehensive 9-1, 11-0 win over Niue's Catherine Papani and Christine Ioane in the women's pairs.
