Team Wales gymnasts narrowly miss out on medal in team event

Wales narrowly missed out on a medal by one point in the women's gymnastics team final after an agonising wait in Glasgow.

Ruby Evans, Emily and Abigail Roper, Frances Stone and Jemima Taylor set a competitive score of 153.400 before being made to wait until Australia, Canada, England and South Africa had completed their routines.

The Welsh team, frequently shown on the big screen across the two-hour gap, sat together in the crowd near their squad of supporters who had been vocal during their performances earlier in the day.

After three rotations, Wales sat in 4th place with England occupying the bronze medal spot, with just the floor left.

There was some controversy when the incorrect music was played for English gymnast Shanna-Kae Grant's routine, which only added to the tension.

Abigail Martin stepped onto the podium as England's final competitor, knowing that a score better than 12.350 on the floor would be enough to leapfrog Wales onto the podium.

Martin secured the best floor score of the night with 13.250, giving England the bronze with a final score of 154.300.

Australia claimed gold with a score of 158.400 while Canada secured silver with 157.300.

The team event serves as qualification for individual events and Ruby Evans qualified in second for Sunday night's all-around final.

She will be joined by Emily Roper who qualified in ninth.

Evans has also qualified for the balance beam, floor and uneven bars finals.

Emily Roper will be joined by her twin sister Abigail in the vault final and will also join Evans in the uneven bars.
