    A disappointing session overall for McLaren so far.

    That's first practice in the books at the Hungaroring.

    Charles Leclerc ends the hour top of the timesheets with a time of 1:19.075 on the soft compound tyre, 0.484 seconds quicker than the Red Bull of Max Verstappen.

    The other Ferrari of Lewis Hamilton is third, Verstappen's team-mate Isack Hadjar is fourth and Mercedes' George Russell finishes fifth on the timesheets.

  5. The debrief has begun at Ferrari as Charles Leclerc and his crew huddle together at the back of the garage. The Monegasque driver will end this session quickest from Max Verstappen and his team-mate Lewis Hamilton, but he won't want to lose any more track time on Friday.

    Over at Williams, his old Scuderia buddy Carlos Sainz is going to be investigated for two incidents of driving erratically in this session.

    I'm indifferent to Aston Martin in general, but I really hope they can make a big leap forward here. I don't want to see any team struggle like this. It isn't good for the people involved or the sport in general.

  8. Troubles for Leclerc

    Stick a pin in Turn One as a potential banana skin for drivers this weekend.

    "Uh, something has broke," says leader Charles Leclerc to his Ferrari engineer. He's safely made it to the pit lane and the mechanics are running towards his smoking car. There are only six minutes left of the session, but could this be a bigger issue going foward for the Italian team? Lewis Hamilton also said his car felt bad earlier in first practice.

    This track is made for Ferrari to do well. And in Hamilton they have the best driver for a circuit with loads of twists and turns.

    Sainz locks up at Turn One

    It's quite a pickle for Aston Martin, but nevertheless, two-time world champion Fernando Alonso pops in a flyer on the soft compound and lifts himself to 12th on the board.

    Leonardo Fornaroli is in for Oscar Piastri during this session but the Italian suffers a lock-up at Turn One and has to abandon his quick lap.

    And now Carlos Sainz does the same thing. The Williams drivers screeches to halt at the opening corner and brings out a brief yellow flag.

    The immediate question is what do Aston Martin do with Fernando Alonso for the rest of the session. Do they send him out for another run having checked the rear suspension? Do they not risk that? If they don't, they are not getting the mileage and the learning. It's quite the quandary.

  13. Just before Lance Stroll's spin, Lewis Hamilton completed his flyer on the soft tyre but couldn't beat his Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc to top spot. The seven-time world champion has to settle for third behind Max Verstappen, with a 0.543-second deficit to make up to Monegasque Leclerc.

    Cars are coming back out on track now, minus a heavily upgraded Aston Martin.

    The buggy has arrived to pick Lance Stroll up and deliver him back to the Aston Martin garage. His car is now being recovered as the camera pans to the pit wall and zooms in on Adrian Newey looking slightly concerned. The Canadian is 20th on the timesheets with team-mate Fernando Alonso sitting in 19th. However, neither driver had bolted on the soft tyre before Stroll's incident.

    It's just snapped. Stroll hasn't hit the kerb or anything. The rear suspension is one of the many parts that's new on this car. For the rear suspension to fail in that way is very unusual. It's very alarming for Aston Martin.

    Stroll comes to a stop

    Lance Stroll has stopped in the upgraded Aston Martin and now a yellow flag has turned to red.

    That's actually a big spin for the Canadian and he is on the radio to his pit wall to say he has suspension failure. The rear left tyre is looking very beat up.

  18. Leclerc goes to the top

    Alpine rookie Paul Aron is slipping and sliding all over the final part of the track in Hungary on his soft compound tyre. The Estonian is in for Franco Colapinto for this first practice session and is 19th on the timesheets so far.

    Are Max Verstappen and Red Bull the dark horses for the win this weekend? Charles Leclerc is on the soft rubber and is purple in the opening sector, then the middle sector. Is he going to leapfrong the Dutchman?

    He is. A little bit of drift at the end of the lap doesn't stop Leclerc from going 0.484 seconds faster than the four-time world champion.

  19. Soft tyres on

    The soft tyres are being bolted on now, so what can the likes of George Russell, Max Verstappen nd Lando Norris do?

    Mercedes Russell is purple in the final two sectors of the Hungaroring and he goes quickest - the two Ferraris haven't appeared yet - with a 1:20.066.

    Can Norris beat him? No, because the world champion aborts his lap after running wide at Turn 11.

    Verstappen is up next and as he crosses the line, he goes half a second faster than Russell.

    While George Russell sits fourth on the FP1 timesheets, Kimi Antonelli is watching on from the pit wall during this session as rookie Fred Vesti takes his Mercedes out for a spin. The Italian teenager is 50 points ahead of his team-mate Russell before this weekend's 70-lap contest in Budapest.

    For Ferrari, Lewis Hamilton doesn't have good feedback for his Scuderia pit wall. "The car feels pretty bad," he says.
