Motherwell manager Alfred Johansson: "Coming off pre-season, we had eight players make their debuts with three academy graduates getting their first minutes.

"We managed to get a result in the first leg with all those debuts, looking like a team that wants to fight for each other.

"[HB] are European regulars and we have seen with other Scottish teams how difficult it can be when you face this type of team.

"We managed to keep stability in the way the team plays. It is two legs - this is half-time and it is going to be very difficult to go the Faroe Islands and face them on astroturf. They probably feel they got a pretty good result and [the tie] is alive.

"We need to use this week really good and prepare for a difficult away game.

"We could have scored at least one more, but that's football sometimes. Also, it's nice to see we have a really strong keeper who decides the outcome of the first leg with some class saves.

"It's going to be difficult next week but we go there with confidence.

"I think we're pretty close to do a thing or two [transfer-wise], but it's a long window. We have to have patience to get the right people in the door."

A very happy man after that display and who can blame him.

While it's best not to look too far ahead, that 2-0 win gives Motherwell a decent chance of progressing to the next round of qualifiers as they head to the Faroe Islands next week.

What happens after that?

If they progress they will seal a date with either Coleraine or HJK Helsinki, more likely the latter who put five past Coleraine in Helsinki tonight in the first leg of their tie.

Motherwell beat the Northern Irish side Coleraine during their failed Europa League qualifying attempt in 2020, while on paper HJK pose a more formidable test.

The 2025 Finnish Cup winners finished fifth in their 12-team league last term and are currently fifth in their division after 16 rounds of fixtures, but they boast better European pedigree than their potential Scottish opponents.

They have played in the Conference League proper in two of their past three seasons, drawing with Aberdeen twice in 2023-24.

But scraping past NSI Runavik of the Faroe Islands in qualifying last term before being beaten by the Bulgarian outfit Arda Kardzhali perhaps suggests they are not the force they once were.

Four goals would not have flattered Motherwell. The way they played, with bravery in possession, was exactly like last season and that will enthuse supporters.

For a first competitive game, that was a really strong performance.

Just listening to Sportsound host David Currie list off a couple of things Alfred Johannson said to expect from his Motherwell team in his first interview after he was appointed.

The boss said fans could expect to see a team "being brave on the ball" and "committed" - that's certainly what we saw from them tonight.

Lots of positivity for Motherwell. They have lost a lot of good players - and they need to strengthen - but the patterns of play, the structure, is there.

Willy Vogt was one of many new faces for Motherwell tonight and it's fair to say they impressed.

Centre-back Martin Moormann rattled in the opener while Vogt and Dylan Williams looked sharp and Jake Girdwood-Reich looked decent in defence. Goalkeeper Alex Paulsen didn't have a huge amount to do but made a couple of strong saves too.

Another good stop from Alex Paulsen albeit Storm Bigge Pettersen's shot is straight at the Motherwell goalkeeper.

There are, what I assume to be, a small group of about four HB Torshavn fans sitting several rows in front of me in the main stand.

That assumption is based on the groans that just came from them as their side's latest shot rolled wide of Alex Paulsen's goal.

Another change for Motherwell as Regan Charles-Cook replaces Dylan Williams.

HB Torshavn haven't had a huge amount of the ball in this half but they're certainly creating a few more opportunities.

A bit of confusion between Tom Sparrow and Oscar Priestman in the box as both players leave the ball for the other. HB Tosrhavn's Jakup Thomsen latches onto it and draws a cracking save from newbie Alex Paulsen.

And with that, Vogt makes way for Emmanuel Longelo while Jake Girdwood-Reich is replaced by youngster Luca Ross.
