Speed bumps to be replaced after cars damaged

Speed bumps on a busy thoroughfare are to be replaced at a cost of £9,000 after residents complained about damage to their cars.

Redcar and Cleveland Council said it had received "numerous complaints" regarding the bumps - or 'speed cushions' - in Larkswood Road and Mapleton Crescent, with motorists saying the bumps would regularly clip the underside of their cars.

The council found the speed bumps were of an old specification which has subsequently been deemed too high, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Work to replace them is expected to begin on Monday and last up to two weeks, with temporary traffic lights in place at the junction of Larkswood Road and Mapleton Crescent.

Larkswood Road links West Dyke Road, one of Redcar's busiest and longest roads, with Plantation Road, which runs parallel to the A174.

A spokesperson for the council said: "The speed cushions on Larkswood Road and at the junction with Mapleton Crescent were identified for replacement after receiving numerous requests and complaints.

"They are of an old specification which was higher/more severe than the current specification, so they are being redone.

"They will be replaced with Tarmac speed cushions to the latest specification in the same location as existing ones.

"The works will be done in-house and have a budget estimate of approximately £9,000."
