Improvements at special measures GP surgery

Bosses at a town's only GP surgery, which was placed in special measures, have made progress in improving it, according to a report.

Castlegate and Derwent Surgery, in Cockermouth, Cumbria, was given the lowest rating by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) following an inspection in February.

CQC inspectors found there were breaches of regulation of safe care and treatment, management of the service, safeguarding and acting on complaints.

Members of Labour-led Cumberland Council's health overview and scrutiny committee are expected to consider the report by the Integrated Care Board at a meeting on Thursday, where representatives from the surgery will also be in attendance.

At last month's meeting, Labour MP for Penrith and Solway Markus Campbell-Savours spoke about residents' concerns over the issues with the surgery.

According to the report by the North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board, following the inspection, improvements have been made to complaints handling, incident oversight, safeguarding actions, access recovery, triage arrangements and governance documentation.

The report also asks members of the health overview and scrutiny committee to endorse continued support and proportionate oversight to help ensure the improvements made by the practice are consistently applied and sustained over time, according to Local Democracy Reporting Service.
