Heartbeat star buys pub that appeared in TV show

A former star of the TV drama Heartbeat has become the new co-owner of a village pub that appeared in multiple series.

Tricia Penrose, who played barmaid Gina Ward in the ITV show for 18 years, said she had joined two local businessmen in buying The Goathland Hotel in the North York Moors.

The building in Goathland was used as the Aidensfield Arms in Heartbeat, which ran from 1992 to 2010 and attracted millions of viewers.

Penrose announced the move in a post on Instagram, describing herself as a "proud owner" of the hotel.

Heartbeat, which also starred actors Nick Berry, Derek Fowlds and Bill Maynard, was set in a fictional Yorkshire village during the 1960s.

It was based on the books of Peter Walker, who wrote under the pen name Nicholas Rhea.

Goathland as the fictional Aidensfield remains a popular destination for fans visiting filming locations.

In her social media post, Penrose wrote: "I have some exciting news to announce.

"I am now the proud owner along with two local businessmen of The Goathland Hotel, well known as The Aidensfield Arms where I played Gina Ward for 18 years.

"Gina's going home."

The Goathland Hotel had been run by the Richardson family for more than 40 years.

Many of the programme's pub scenes were filmed there, before a replica of the interior was built, according to the owners of the pub.

The real pub continued to be used for all exterior shots.

Keith and Jean Richardson ran the business with their daughter Hannah.

Announcing the change of ownership, they said: "Proud to have been custodians all this time.

"A time that has seen more changes and challenges in the hospitality industry than ever before.

"That's all before the total one-off of running a building with a film crew round every corner, an experience never to be repeated."

In her social media post Penrose said she hoped to keep customers updated on activities at the hotel through a new YouTube channel and planned to visit the pub to meet supporters following the announcement.
