Public invited to share views on junction crossing

People have been invited to share their views on how improvements could be made to pedestrian and cycle crossings in a busy section of Devon.

Seven roads met at Torre Abbey's gates in Torbay, and drivers were often confused about who went where when the traffic lights went through their cycle, Torbay Council said.

There are currently no signalled pedestrian crossings on the junction, which handles traffic going to and from Torquay seafront and railway station.

The council said it was considering improvements, with the aim to make the junction safer, more accessible and more convenient, and that suggestions from the consultation being held until August would be taken into account.

The seven roads are: Walnut Road, Chestnut Avenue, Avenue Road, Falkland Road (two directions), the King's Drive and the entrance to Torre Abbey.

Councillor Adam Billings, cabinet member for pride in place, said: "Abbey Gates Junction is one of the busiest junctions in Torquay, and with so many roads meeting there and no formal pedestrian crossings it can feel unsafe – especially for families, people with mobility aids, or visitors unfamiliar with the area.

"We want to make crossing the junction safer, more accessible and more convenient for everyone.

"That's why it's so important that people who use the junction take part in the consultation and share their views."

Three new layout options have been developed for the public consultation, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

People have been urged to give their views, with the consultation set to close at 17:00 BST on 10 August.
