Hockney, Barbara and Penny among stone sheep names

A series of seven stone sheep sculptures in Shipley have been named by local schoolchildren.

Glenda, after Shipley Glen, Penny, after the nearby South Pennines, and Titus in honour of Sit Titus Salt are among the selected names.

One of the ewes is called Noor to celebrate the local South Asian community, and the lambs are Barbara, Ewe-nity and Hockney, celebrating the life of Bradford artist David Hockney, who died earlier this year.

Chair of Shipley Town Council, Rhona North, said: "The names have all been so carefully considered and we were delighted by all the wonderful suggestions."

Children at Saltaire Primary School, Wycliffe CE Primary School, Shipley CE Primary School and St Walburga's Catholic Primary School submitted their ideas to Bradford Council and the town council.

The sheep were installed in Market Square in March, having been carved out of limestone by sculptor Dan Jones.

The installation was inspired by the town's name, which is derived from the Old English for sheep pasture.

Shipley Towns Fund chair Gill Thornton said the sculptures were a "beautiful reflection" of the town's heritage, and their names represented the area's history and future.

"They are such an appealing feature and have been so well-received," she added.
