Motorists urged to avoid parts of A1 due to smoke

Motorists have been warned to avoid the A1 in North Yorkshire due to "lots of black smoke" from a fire.

Firefighters are at the scene of a blaze involving an agricultural building in Roman Road, Leeming, near the RAF base.

Fire engines from Bedale, Northallerton, Richmond, Thirsk and Ripon are at the scene, with nearby residents being advised to keep their doors and windows closed.

A North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We have received reports that smoke is blowing over the A1. Please try to avoid the area if possible."
