A man has died and a woman has been left with serious injuries after a crash.

A white Hyundai i30 was joining the A1 at Belford from the B1342 junction at 16:10 BST on Friday when it hit a car transporter lorry which was travelling south on the A1, according to police.

The Hyundai driver, in his 80s, died at the scene and a female passenger in her 70s was seriously injured and taken to hospital by air ambulance. She remains in a critical condition.

Sgt Alex Partington, from Northumbria Police's Road Policing Unit, said his team would like to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time.

A section of the road was closed for several hours to allow the recovery of vehicles and investigative work to be carried out, it is now reopened.
